American automaker Ford Motor Company andAmerican pizza restaurant chain Domino’s pizzahave collaborated to provide an industry first self-driving vehicle delivering Pizza. Now, in its testing phase; both companies will evaluate customer reactions to interacting with a self-driving as a part of their delivery experience.<\/p>\n

How will it work?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Customer will be selected randomly and then Domino’s and Ford will deliver pizza in the Ann Arbor, Michigan in a Ford Fusion Hybrid equipped with self-driving technology and initially vehicles will be piloted by human drivers.<\/p>\n

Customers who agree to participate will be able to track the delivery vehicle through GPS along with the upgraded version of Domino’s Tracker. They will also receive text messages as and when the self-driving vehicle approaches customer will have to meet it in the street. Then it will guide them on how to retrieve their pizza using a unique code to unlock the Domino\u2019s \u201cHeatwave Compartment\u201d inside the vehicle.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a clever marketing move by both the companies but it also gives rise to a vital question which needs a little attention compared to the technical challenge of autonomy: How will humans interact with driverless cars? How far are people willing to go to meet the car?<\/p>\n

Domino’s takes on collaboration<\/strong><\/p>\n

President of Domino\u2019s USA said delightfully that \u201cwe\u2019re interested to learn what people think about this type of delivery and the majority of our questions are the last 50 feet of the delivery experience. We made to make sure the interface is clear and simple. We need to understand if a customer\u2019s experience is different if the car is parked in the driveway versus next to the curb. Company\u2019s testing research department is focused on the aim that someday they willmake deliveries with self-driving vehicles as seamless and customer-friendly as possible.<\/p>\n

Domino\u2019s has been into the idea of autonomous vehicles for a few years now. It has already announced the tests of delivery robots in Australia and in Germany but those trials were in partnership with smaller robotics start-ups, and now this self-driving cat test involves more traditional car-maker.<\/p>\n

Ford and Domino’s completed preliminary testing of the delivery process using the vehicle in self-driving mode at Mcity and the city of Ann Arbor has been supportive of the testing process.<\/p>\n
